Implementation support for CA EJ legislature
As a member of the UC Berkeley Sustainability and Health Equity Lab, I served as a lead geospatial analyst to inform the implementation of state bills SB 673 (managing hazardous waste) and AB 617 (protecting community air quality) in concert with the CA Department of Toxic Substances Control and Air Resources Board, respectively.
'Toxic Tides' in CA
I contributed to a modeling effort aimed at evaluating coastal risk to sea level rise in California. Specifically, inundation and flood risk to industrial facilities was assessed to gauge potential exposure of surrounding communities to possible mobilized contaminants during high-water events. We estimate that the areas projected to experience flooding events by 2100 are home to 145,000 residents and over 400 hazardous facilities, with disadvantaged communities being ~5x more likely to live within 1km of one or more facilities at risk of flooding in 2050, and ~6x more likely in 2100.
